In 2015, the United Nations proposed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG in short), which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. The SDGs consist of 17 different goals, which each country has to work towards in the next few years. These goals aim to end poverty, improve health and education, increase equality and spur economic growth up to the year 2030.
These sustainable goals are very important. And we, as humans living on this planet, can do our fair share on reaching these goals in the upcoming years. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of these defined UN goals, which significantly decreases the likeliness of reaching these goals in 2030.
The main goal for this game is to make people aware of the different goals proposed by the United Nations and have them participate in the effort of collectively reaching these goals by 2030.
How can this game make people aware of the STGs?
The 17 defined SDGs are put into three separate categories: society, economy and environment. This is a commonly used separation within the SDGs.
The game consists of a physical and a digital part and is thus considered a blended game. We worked on the digital part and collaborated with students of the Business Innovation course, whom have worked on the physical part of the game.
Fun is an important aspect of the game, which usually makes learning new things easier. There are three mini games (one for each of the defined categories) within the digital part of the game and several actions you can buy in the physical part. These actions reflect your cartoon-ish styled earth in the digital game and your earth improves with new trees (environment), larger offices (economy) or happy citizens (society).
I did the whole UI design of this game including the title screen, new game screen and the main game screen. My group made the mini games and I made the explanation screen and connected all games into one game.
